In colonial Salem, Massachusetts, the death of a close friend compels an elderly Benjamin Pratt to reveal a secret he has carried for most of his life. His story begins decades earlier, when a mysterious encounter in the forest forever changes the course of his youth.
At 13, Benjamin meets an unsettling stranger who calls himself Cyrus Eblis. The encounter draws him into a series of increasingly sinister events that spread from Salem to the prosperous shoemaking town of Lynn. Disguised as a craftsman, Eblis appears to manufacture ordinary soles—but Benjamin gradually discovers that the shoemaker’s true purpose is far more horrifying: he intends to claim human souls.
Benjamin’s struggle against Eblis spans eight terrifying years, testing his courage, faith, and grasp on reality. He is joined by his preacher cousin Caleb, his steadfast friend Samantha, and Rachel, whose spiritual insight may be essential to confronting the evil that has taken hold of the town.
