Europe, 1916. The Great War has engulfed the continent, while the United States remains officially outside the conflict. Behind the scenes, however, American intelligence is closely monitoring German operations and the growing threats unfolding across Europe.

Dr. Francis Nash appears to lead a respectable academic life as a history professor at the University of Pittsburgh. In reality, he also serves as an undercover agent for the U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence. When Nash is entrusted with delivering sensitive photographs to an operative within the British Secret Intelligence Service, he is drawn into a mission far more dangerous than anticipated.

A chance encounter with the intelligent and mysterious Peggy Harrelson soon entangles Nash in murder, international espionage, and a deadly pursuit across war-torn Europe. German agents are closing in, Russian revolutionaries have their own agenda, and Nash’s British counterpart, Reilly, seems to shift unpredictably between ally and adversary.

At the center of the conflict is an obscure letter connected to Catherine the Great. Though written more than a century earlier, its contents may hold consequences for Britain, Germany, Russia, and the outcome of the war itself.

To survive, Nash must determine whom he can trust—including Peggy, whose identity and motives may be far more complicated than they first appear.
